1st Division Match Reports
The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's First Team secure a convincing win against the Newark Jaguars at home on Saturday 28th January 2012
Final score : CELTS 55 - 36 Jaguars
The CELTS played the Newark Jaguars in their first match of the CELTS first season in the First Division and narrowly lost (59-51). The CELTS are learning a lot from their first season since promotion and were looking forward to the opportunity to replay the Jaguars and see what progress has been made in their game.
On Saturday 28th January 2012 the Jaguars made the long trip down to Cardiff (and the CELTS home venue at Eastern Leisure Centre), won the tip and were the first to put points on the board. The game was flowing evenly from end to end but the CELTS were not able, at the start of the game, to make use of their home court advantage and after five minutes, the Jaguars were up 6 - 2. Coach Jo Coates-McGrath called a time out to steady the troops but the CELTS have learned a lot over the last month and were not panicking. The time out gave the home team to take the proverbial breathe and they came out firing. The CELTS dominated the second half of the first period. Baskets fell for the CELTS' Liam Holt, Phil Cochrane, Wiley Martinez and Mo Khan and the CELTS went into the first break 14-8 in the lead.
The momentum built by the home team before the break was continued into the second quarter and the CELTS unrelentingly raced ahead. The CELTS had adjusted to a hustling defence and the Jaguars were panicking under the pressure. After a 6 minute dry period, during which the CELTS ran in 12 points, the away team called a time out and the adjustments made the two teams much more competitive for the second part of the second period. The teams traded baskets but the significant damage had been done. The CELTS' Holt, Cochrane, Caroline Matthews, Wandersen Martinez and Steve McGrath managed to chalk up a massive 22 points in the second quarter and the Jaguars were only able to answer with 10 points of their own. The CELTS went into the break 36 - 18 in the lead.
The Jaguars took the half time break to assess the match and adjust their tactics and the third period was much more evenly matched. The third period was closely fought as the Jaguars struggled with everything they had to regain control of the game. Both teams' defences were tight and were successfully preventing the other team from converting the opportunities that they were creating. The result was a relatively low scoring but closely matched quarter that the CELTS narrowly managed to win 10-8. Baskets dropped for the CELTS' Holt, Cochrane, Wandersen Martinez, Matthews and Rhys Thomas.
The CELTS went into the final quarter leading 46-22. The damage had really been done in the second period and, with the Jaguars failing to make a dent in the CELTS' lead in the third period, the CELTS went into the final period with a comfortable lead and were now able to run every member of their bench. The CELTS are incredibly lucky to benefit from a strong bench and, despite running lines that were not used to regularly working with each other, the quality and tenacity of the home team did not falter. The Jaguars managed to just take the final period 10-9, but it was too little too late. The CELTS' Cochrane, Matthews and Wandersen Martinez contributed to the scoreline in the final period and the CELTS were able to end the match with a Cochrane trademark three pointer - which brought a loud cheer from the loyal CELTS supporters!
Final Score : CELTS 55 - Jaguars 36
CELTS Scorers : Phil Cochrane - 17; Liam Holt - 12; Caroline Matthews - 10; Wandersen Martinez - 8, Steve McGrath - 2; Mo Khan - 2; Wiley Martinez - 2; and Rhys Thomas - 2.
The CELTS started a little slowly but were not rattled and came roaring back at the Jaguars throughout the latter half of the first quarter and the second quarter of this game. By the half time break the damage had been done and once the Jaguars had been unable to respond in the third period the result was inevitable. The CELTS showed a gritty and determined performance and showed that they are just as good at holding a lead as they are at coming back from being down. The game felt much closer than the score line reflects as both teams were making scoring opportunities but the CELTS were successfully able to slow down the Jaguars main scoring threats. This possibly made the difference in this match as the Jaguars were also concentrating on shutting down the CELTS main scoring threats but one of the CELTS strengths is that every member of their team can score and, now left unguarded, the entire team stepped up to the mark. This was a true team effort for the CELTS which everyone can be very proud of.
The next few matches for CELTS' teams are away and match reports and results will be available on the Club Website shortly after each game. Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th February 2012 is the next big home weekend for the CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club. The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's First Team narrowly lose out away against the Birmingham Blackcats on Sunday 22nd January 2012
Final score : CELTS 48 - 55 Blackcats
A depleted CELTS First team made the short journey up to Birmingham to play the Blackcats on Sunday 22nd January 2012. The CELTS were missing guard Mo Khan and forward Rhys Thomas and were greeted with the toughest rubber court they'd ever played on - it made a 40 minute match feel like you had pushed a marathon on sand!!!
Despite the difficulties, the CELTS got off to a very quick start with baskets dropping for Caroline Matthews, Phil Cochrane, Liam Holt and Wandersen Martinez in the opening minutes. In fact, six minutes into the game the CELTS had a 10-2 lead and, having caught the home team napping, the Blackcats were forced to take a time out and change their line up and tactics. The change of pace and strategy had the desired effect and the Blackcats came roaring back into the game in the latter half of the first period. They actually managed to level the score before the whistle was blown and both teams went into the first break tied at 12 points each.
Despite their initial success, the CELTS struggled in the second period as the slow rubber court began to tire the away team. The Blackcats momentum from the end of the first period continued and their really tall centre (Rob Smith) began to dominate at both ends of the court. The home side took full advantage of their conditioning on the tough flooring and began to make the most of fast break opportunities that the CELTS were, at first, unable to prevent. They pulled away from the CELTS significantly for the first half of the period, taking a 22-14 lead after 6 minutes. The CELTS were forced to adjust their line up and tactics and Coach Jo Coates-McGrath called a time out. The CELTS were not going to give up without a fight and the remainder of the second period ran from end to end with both teams scoring evenly. Baskets dropped for the CELTS' Cochrane, and Matthews and the CELTS went into the half time break trailing 21-28.
A short half time rest brought a new lease of life to the CELTS tiring arms and they came out on fire in the third period. The away team was now in a hustling defence which was causing errors and turnovers from the experienced Blackcats team. The CELTS made the most of the opportunities they created and after 9 minutes they had banked 7 baskets whilst the Blackcats' Smith had only managed to score once. The CELTS had taken the lead and were now 5 points clear of the home team when the CELTS' centre, Caroline Matthews, straps broke as she tilted to block a shot. With Matthews temporarily out of the game the home team managed to run in quick three baskets in the final minute of the quarter…giving the Blackcats a one point lead at the end of the third period (36-35). The CELTS' Matthews, Cochrane, Wandersen Martinez and Steve McGrath all added to the CELTS score line in the third period.
There was everything to fight for as the two teams took to the floor for the final quarter and for the first few minutes the teams traded baskets evenly. However, the extremely tough floor surface at the Blackcats home venue was now definitely taking its toll on the CELTS and the home team were ready to take advantage of the tiring arms of the travelling team. The Blackcats Smith impressively continued to dominate both offensive and defensive ends and the CELTS, ultimately, were not able to respond. The away team did manage to finish, however, with a Phil Cochrane "trademark" three in the final minute of the game!
Final Score : CELTS 48 - Blackcats 55
CELTS Scorers : Phil Cochrane - 21; Caroline Matthews - 11; Liam Holt - 6; Wandersen Martinez - 6 and Steve McGrath - 4.
The really tough pushing surface definitely affected the outcome of this match, particularly as the CELTS had travelled with a shorter bench than usual. Wiley Martinez did an extremely good defensive job in this match and he continues to make impressive contributions to the CELTS first team. The Blackcats are experienced first division campaigners and this was another evenly matched competition for the CELTS (who are new to the first division). The Blackcats height advantage (in their Centre, Rob Smith) and overall better conditioning gave them the slight advantage they needed on this occasion. Both teams enjoyed the match which was good natured despite being extremely hard fought and the CELTS look forward to seeing the Blackcats again next season.
The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's First and Second teams are in action again next weekend on 28 January 2012 at home (Eastern Leisure Centre). The CELTS first team are taking on the Jaguars at 12.50 and then CELTS 2 take on the Blazers at 2.50pm. CELTS 1 narrowly lost to the Jaguars in their first match in division one and are now ready for revenge!!! Both matches will be exciting and dynamic clashes and a noisy home crowd always helps us along - so please come down to support your local wheelchair basketball club!!!! AND ENTRY IS FREE!!!!
It would be great to meet you at one of our matches soon!

The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's First Team open 2012 with a narrow win over the Leicester Cobras on Sunday 15th January 2012
Final score : CELTS 59 - 56 Cobras
The CELTS 1st and 2nd teams were in action at Eastern Leisure Centre on Sunday 15th January 2012. CELTS 2 were in action first, playing against the Hampshire Harriers (in the third division), and brought home a convincing 48-28 win. Then it was time for CELTS 1 to take on Leicester Cobras in their first First Division clash of 2012.
The CELTS lost the tip but were first to put points on the board with a quick basket following from the CELTS' Wandersen Martinez. The Cobras responded quickly and the two teams traded baskets very evenly throughout the first period. The Cobras managed to convert a couple of opportunities more than the CELTS and went into the first break with a narrow 16-12 lead over the CELTS. The CELTS' Martinez, Caroline Matthews, Phil Cochrane and Liam Holt had all put points on the board in the first period.
The second period saw the CELTS step up a gear. The match was still flowing from end to end and the speed of the Cobra's G. Bates and consistent outside shooting from their guard Vaidya were causing the CELTS problems. But the home team were up to the task at hand and the momentum of the match began to change. The CELTS won the quarter 16-14, taking them into the half time break trailing by two points (at 28-30). The CELTS Martinez, Matthews, Cochrane, Holt and Steve McGrath had all contributed to the scoreline in the second period.
The CELTS came out ON FIRE at the beginning of the third period. The defensive set up had been changed to deal with Bates and Vaidya and the new approach led to a Cobra scoring drought which lasted for the first 6 minutes of the third period. In the meantime, however, the CELTS had run in a quick succession of baskets from Martinez, Cochrane, Holt, Matthews and Mo Khan. In fact, 12 points from the CELTS went unanswered. The Cobra's were wondering what had hit them and called a time out to discuss tactics and make substitutions - bringing on their player/coach Matt Foden. The second half of the third period saw the Cobras re-establish some equality in the game but the damage had already been done. Foden had a definite and dramatic effect on the game but he could not prevent the CELTS from winning the quarter (which ended with the trade-mark Cochrane three point buzzer beater) 17-10.
The CELTS went into the final period with a narrow 45-40 lead which led to a tense and hard fought 10 minute quarter. The Cobras were pressing but could not prevent the CELTS from scoring and, similarly, the CELTS had managed to slow Bates and shut down Vaidya but Foden proved much more difficult to stop and, effectively, he kept the Cobras in the game. The team's traded baskets throughout the ten minute period but the CELTS narrowly clung to the lead they had established in the third period for the remainder of the game.
Final Score : CELTS 59 - Cobras 56
CELTS Scorers : Phil Cochrane - 21; Wandersen Martinez - 12; Liam Holt - 12; Caroline Matthews - 10; Steve McGrath - 2 and Mo Khan - 2.
This was a tremendous win for CELTS 1 and it was a real team effort which everyone contributed towards. The CELTS had so many scoring options that it was difficult for the Cobras to focus on shutting down any one or two people. The beginning of the third period was critical to the outcome of the match and the CELTS showed some true grit under pressure at the end to hang onto that lead.
GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!!
The large and noisy home crowd definitely helped - and we hope to see all our friends and supporters at the next home match.
The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's next game will see CELTS 1 take on the Birmingham Blackcats away on Sunday 22 January 2012. A match report will be available on the club website shortly afterwards.

The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball First Team end their 2011 games with their first win of their inaugural First Division season at home against the GB Women's Coyotes Team on Saturday 10 December 2011
Final score : CELTS 49 - 46 GB Women Coyotes
The CELTS warmed up well on their home court and were ready to start against the Coyotes, who are the half of the GB Womens squad who are entered into the central region of the First Division.
The Coyotes' Centre, Fiona Tozer, won the tip and the GB women were the first to put points on the board. Both teams struggled to score for the first few minutes. They were creating scoring opportunities but were unable to sink the baskets for the first few minutes. The match was being played with a Size 6 ball (women's size) and the CELTS were struggling to shoot with it. Five minutes had passed and the Coyotes had scored twice before the CELTS' Wandersen Martinez opened the CELTS scoring and, from that point forward, the first quarter was quite evenly matched. The CELTS' Harri Jenkins, who was making his debut appearance in the First division made a valuable contribution to the CELTS offence in the first period. However, the Coyotes won it 13-6 and Wandersen was the only CELTS' player who had managed to score with the unfamiliar ball.
The second period followed a similar pattern, with the CELTS initially creating scoring opportunities but being unable to convert the same into points. The Coyotes had run up another 10 points and another five minutes had passed before the CELTS finally adjusted to the ball and the opposition and really began to challenge the away team for a significant foot hold in the match. Baskets had fallen for the CELTS' Wandersen Martinez, Tom Seaborne (who was making his first appearance in the First Division) and the CELTS' captain, Liam Holt. The half time score was Coyotes 31 - CELTS 16.
The half time break was longer than usual, whilst the referees discussed one of the Coyote's players and the conclusion of that debate was a decision that the Coyote's primary ball handler, Laurie Williams, could not take part in the second half. At first, this did not seem to rattle the Coyotes, but the CELTS came out fighting in the second half with a full court press that gathered momentum throughout the third period. The Coyotes were scoring at their usual pace for the first few minutes but as the CELTS settled into their change in defence, the Coyotes scoring rate dropped and the CELTS were able to create further offensive opportunities out of the steals and fast breaks they were creating in the press. Baskets dropped for the CELTS' Wandersen Martinez, Liam Holt and Caroline Matthews and the third period turned out to be the closest 10 minutes of the match - the Coyotes narrowly won it 12-10.
The CELTS came out fighting in the final ten minute period, they were 26-43 down but were not out! The momentum that the CELTS had established, particularly towards the end of the third period, gathered momentum in the final quarter and the Coyotes had no answer. The CELTS press was generating panic in the GB Women's team and the CELTS were able to pick off the frantic passing which followed. The CELTS ran in 16 points over the next 8 minutes to level the score at 43 each. At that point, the Coyotes' Emily Scrivener hit a free throw to break the away team's dead lock and take a one point lead. The CELTS' Wandersen Martinez quickly added another basket to his incredible scoring spree and the CELTS, for the first time and in the final minute of the game, took the lead. Wandersen Martinez quickly added another basket before making a "touch down" pass to his brother, Wiley Martinez who added the last two points of the match for the CELTS. The Coyote's Maddie Thompson hit the final basket of the game and the CELTS inbounded the ball and held it for the final two seconds.
The CELTS finished their last match of 2011 with a win!!
Final Score : CELTS 49 - Coyotes 46
CELTS Scorers : Wandersen Martinez - 24; Liam Holt - 12; Caroline Matthews - 8; Wiley Martinez - 3 and Tom Seaborne - 2.
This was the first win of the CELTS inaugural first division season - and they are going into the Christmas break with a tremendous sense of achievement. After going 20 points down to the GB Women in this game, the home team didn't panic and never gave up. The CELTS stuck together as a unit and were determined to enjoy the game. The Quarter scores tell the story of the game : 6-13, 10-18, 10-12 and then a MASSIVE 23-3! The CELTS' Wandersen Martinez ran in a massive 24 points for the home team but the victory was the result of a true team effort. Two CELTS players made their debut in the First Division and contributed immediately to the game. It was a really great effort and result from everyone involved.
This was the last match before the CELTS go into their Christmas and New Year Break - and we would like to wish all our friends and supporters and really great holiday period!!
The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's next game will see CELTS 2 take on the Bears away on Sunday 8 January 2012. Our next home match (at Eastern Leisure Centre, Cardiff) is against the Cobras on Sunday 15 January 2012, tip off at 12.50pm. This will be the first time the CELTS have met the Cobras, so we really don't know what to expect - but its certain to be a dynamic and exciting clash and a noisy home crowd would certainly help us.
Entry to all our games is free - so please come along and support us!

The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball First Team suffer the first heavy defeat of their inaugural First Division season away against the RGK TCat Rhinos on Saturday 19 November 2011
Final score : CELTS 28 - 69 Rhinos
The CELTS 1st and 2nd teams made the trip to Telford College on Saturday 19 November 2011 to meet the Rhino's First and Third Division teams. The second match of the day saw the CELTS first team (newly promoted to the First Division) take on established first division campaigners, the RGK T Cat Rhinos.
The CELTS were caught out by an extremely short warm up and started the game slowly and quietly, almost intimidated by the reputation of the home team. The Rhinos won the tip and their centre (and captain) Dazz Peasley hit the first of an incredible first period scoring spree. The Rhinos rampaged over the CELTS and eight very long minutes passed before the CELTS managed to put points on the board. By that stage, however, the Rhinos had clocked up 18 points and scored another two baskets after the CELTS' Wandesen Martinez had saved the travelling team a complete whitewash in the first ten minutes. The score at the end of the first quarter was CELTS 2, Rhinos 22.
The CELTS recognised the slow start had cost them dearly but were adamant that the first ten minute period was not representative of the quality of basketball that they were capable of. They came out fighting in the second period and a quick basket from the CELTS' Caroline Matthews set the CELTS up for a much more evenly fought second period. The CELTS defence was tighter and they successfully managed to reduce the Rhino's scoring rate. The game flowed from end to end and the CELTS were managing to defend some of the Rhino's fast breaks (which the away team had not been able to stop in the first period). The second quarter was much more evenly matched (baskets dropped for the CELTS' Wandesen Martinez, Caroline Matthews and Mo Khan) but the home team still managed to win the period 14-9. The teams went into the half time break with the scoreline 26-11 in the Rhino's favour.
The CELTS looked to adjust their tactics in the half time break but unfortunately they started the third period slowly and the home team were able to run away with the game again. The CELTS were still managing to prevent most of the Rhinos' fast breaks but the home team were managing to break through the CELTS defence and did not waste the opportunities that they created. The CELTS, on the other hand, were making scoring opportunities and, unfortunately, failing to convert them. The CELTS' Liam Holt and Steve McGrath added to the scoreline for the CELTS but the Rhinos had added another 21 points before the third period ended, leaving the CELTS trailing 17 - 57 going into the final period.
The CELTS were still frustrated with their performance and came out fighting in the final period…finally showing something of the read and react basketball that they are known for. The CELTS finally focussed on shutting down their defensive end whilst making the most of the opportunities that they were making at the other end. Against the run of the whole game, the CELTS managed to narrowly win the last period with the CELTS' Matthews sinking a last basket on the final buzzer.
Final Score : CELTS 28 - Rhinos 69
CELTS Scorers : Wandersen Martinez - 10; Caroline Matthews - 7; Phil Cochrane - 4; Liam Holt - 3; Steve McGrath - 2 and Mo Khan - 2.
This is the CELTS' first team's first season in the first division (having been newly promoted at the end of last season) and the CELTS learned a lot from the toughest match that they have faced so far at this higher level. The better team won on the day but the final score did not reflect the standard of basketball and unrelenting fight that the CELTS showed. They did not give up and persistently made scoring opportunities throughout the match, unfortunately, the CELTS shots just would not drop (until the last period) whilst the Rhinos didn't seem able to miss. The CELTS took some valuable lessons away from this experience and now have several weeks of training to work on those points before their next game.

The newly promoted CELTS Wheelchair Basketball First Team narrowly lose their first home game after narrowly leading against the Birmingham Blackcats (who won the First Division southern region in the 2010-11 season) at Eastern Leisure Centre in Cardiff on Sunday 30th October 2011
Final score : CELTS 44 - 52 Blackcats
The Blackcats made the short trip down from Birmingham to meet the CELTS in Cardiff on Sunday 30th October 2011. The CELTS are the "new guys" in the First Division (having finished the 2010/11 season as Second Division champions) whilst the Blackcats are "old school" First Division. The CELTS knew the Blackcats had won the First Division (Southern Region) during the 2010-11 season and were expecting a tough game.
The Blackcats huge centre (Rob Smith) won the tip and dominated the offensive and defensive boards against the shorter CELTS team for a full 40 minutes. The Blackcats were first to put scores on the board and, although the game was moving from end to end with the CELTS securing good shooting opportunities, the home rings stubbornly refused to accept any of the CELTS shots for the first six minutes of the game! By that stage, the Blackcats were up 10-0 and Coach Coates-McGrath called a time out to steady the panicking CELTS. It was the opportunity to collect themselves that the CELTS needed and the CELTS' Liam Holt and Phil Cochrane quickly added basket each. The Blackcats had started in an emphatic way and went into the first break leading 12-4.
The early lead that the Blackcats had managed to establish with little resistance from the apparently outgunned home team led to a false sense of security and they were caught out by the tenacity of the pressing defence that the CELTS brought out in the second period. The CELTS managed to force a number of turn overs and 8 second violations and, finally, the CELTS baskets began to fall. The CELTS' Holt, Cochrane, Caroline Matthews and Mo Khan all added to the score line and, having frustrated the Blackcat's main scoring threats, the CELTS ran away with the second quarter 18-9. Having forced a tremendous turn around the CELTS went into the half time break one point in the lead : 22-21.
The Blackcats came back with a vengeance in the third period. The more experienced first division campaigners were not flustered by the come back that the home team had made and they quickly and calmly regained a short lead within seconds of the quarter starting. The teams traded baskets for the first few minutes, before baskets from the CELTS' Matthews, Holt, Cochrane and Wiley Martinez gave the home team a short run (taking the lead 30-27 after 7 minutes) and forced the Blackcats to call a time out and adjust their tactics. The new direction of the Blackcats basketball caught the CELTS by surprise and the Cats were able to run in a number of fast breaks to re-establish their momentum and go into the final period leading 34-30.
The final ten minute period was frantic. The game continued to run from end to end at an incredible pace. The Blackcats began to outscore the home team, but only because they had a higher shooting percentage. The CELTS were creating scoring opportunities but were simply not converting as many as the Blackcats. The CELTS' Cochrane, Matthews and Steve McGrath added a further 14 points to the home team's score but, unfortunately, the Blackcats ran up a further 18 points in the final and high scoring quarter…leading to the Blackcats winning the game 52-44.
Final Score : CELTS 44 - Blackcats 52
CELTS Scorers : Phil Cochrane - 16; Caroline Matthews - 10; Liam Holt - 8; Steve McGrath - 6; Mo Khan - 2 and Wiley Martinez - 2.
The clocks went back over the night of Saturday 29th October 2011 and either the extra hour in bed left the CELTS starting the game in a very sleepy fashion or the home team were simply nervous about meeting the experienced and highly successful Birmingham Blackcats. The CELTS started tentatively and were letting the Blackcats dictate the pace. As soon as the CELTS settled into their own game they were back in the game and competing very evenly with the away team. The Blackcats height advantage (in their Centre, Rob Smith) gave them a significant advantage and were unable to compete, particularly as the CELTS were missing one of their own centres for this game (Wandersen Martinez). Still the CELTS found a way to stay in the match and, if a few more baskets had dropped for the home side they could have come away with a win. Considering this is the CELTS' first foray into the First Division, it was another extremely good result and the CELTS came away optimistic about their future in the first division.
It was a spirited and exciting game played in good spirits by both teams. The CELTS look forward to seeing the Blackcats again later in the season!
The CELTS Wheelchair Basketball Club's First and Second teams are in action again on 19 November 2011 away against the Wolverhampton Rhinos. Match reports will appear on the website shortly after those games.
